The successful roll out of the kit is seen as a major stepping stone in putting Cairns on the map as it bids to become one of the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) official safe community network members.

There are currently 133 Safe Communities across the world, including 2 in Queensland’s Mackay/Whitsunday and Townsville regions.

Delfin Lend Lease National Environment Health & Safety Manager Shane O’Brien said the creation of the safety kit was not only a step in the right direction for Cairns receiving WHO accreditation, but recognition for the ongoing commitment of key community groups who had worked hard for benefit of the region.

“The purpose of the Child Safety Kit is to raise awareness of child safety issues – not only around the family home but also in the wider community,” he said.

“This is a source of information that will quickly earn its place in every family home – it spells out everything from preventing slips, burns and bites, to managing the threat of motor vehicles and conducting your own home safety audit.

Forest Gardens Project Director Andrea Jackson said the Child Safety Kit was another product of the successful ongoing collaboration between Delfin Lend Lease and the QSCSC in supporting the safety of Queensland communities. Local community groups and organisations involved in early childhood programs have assisted in the development of the kit aby providing feedback on presentation and content.

“Delfin Lend Lease has always strived to ensure its communities have access to support and advice about child and household safety – this kit is another example of Delfin actively working with the community, for the benefit of the community.
“Many early childhood programs in Cairns have applauded the introduction of the kit, and look forward to implementing many of the important safety tips,“ she said.

Upon completion in 2009, Forest Gardens’ residents will enjoy 42 hectares of green open space incorporating eight village parks and 11 kilometres of hike and bike trails, a recreational oval and tennis court.

Forest Gardens is being developed by Delfin Lend Lease in a joint venture with Orix Australia.

Delfin Lend Lease is Australia’s largest developer of master-planned communities with 16 projects trading nationally.
